Sunscreen & Anti-oxidants
Important facts on Sunscreen Drug Agents, Anti-oxidants, Skin Care Products;
And what Recent Research says about the Sun and your Skin.
Skin aging is a consequence of the normal aging process. As a person grows older, every part of the body ages including the skin. The skin wrinkles, sags and age spots appears.
Cumulative sun damage accounts for 90 per cent of the skin’s aging in a condition known as extrinsic aging. The remaining 10 per cent is determined by genetic factors and is known as intrinsic aging.
ANTI AGING SKIN CARE TIP:
Start taking sun protection measures from NOW ON. Otherwise, you will suffer the effects of cumulative sun damage later on in life. Taking precautions from an early age is very important.

*A change of attitudes is necessary!!
The effects of Long-term UV Exposure:
- Sunburn is immediately recognized but long term photo-damage is just as, if not more, of a concern.
- Photo-damage includes:
◦ Freckling and uneven pigmentation
◦ DNA damage (which can lead to cancer)
◦ Thickening of epidermis (leathery appearance)
◦ Wrinkling and sagging of the skin
- Loss of elasticity
- Cross-linking of collagen (glycation :( )
- Flattening of the Dermal/ epidermal junction (crucial cusion layer)
- Comprised synthesis of dermal proteins
All of the above are accelerated with UV/ photo-damage.
Types of UV Rays:
- UV-A (lower energy but more penetrating, generally associated with Aging)
- UV-B (high energy but less penetrating, generally associated with Sunburn)
- UV-C (these rays do not reach the earth's surface)
Two types of sunscreen actives that currently exist:
- Physical (also known as inorganic)- Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide)
- Chemical (also known as organic)- Avobenzone, Benzophenone-3, Octinoxate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Hemosalate
There are only two approved UV-A drug actives currently in the US:
- Zinc Oxide and Avobenzone
- There are many more approved UV-B drug actives in the US.
*The SPF CLAIM
- SPF is only a measure of UV-B protection.
- An SPF above 50 is completely unnecessary and unfavorable.
- SPF 50 shields 98% of UV rays while and SPF 100 only shields 1% more (99%) of the UV rays while greatly increasing the level of active drug exposure.
- SPF 15= protects against 92% of UV rays
- SPF 30= protects against 96.7% of UV rays
- SPF 40= protects against 97.5% of UV rays
- SPF 50= protects against 98% of UV rays
Recent Research Results:
- Research has shown that high SPFs can be obtained when a combination of physical and chemical sunscreen agents are used.
- Advancements concerning particle size of physical sunscreens:
- Small particle size is desirable because consumers do not like the white cast associated with physical sunscreens
- Particle sizes that are too small can more easily penetrate and react in the skin/ “nano” size.
*Must READ: Beyond Sunscreen actives, are anti-oxidants really necessary??
- It has been known for several decades that UV radiation causes the release of harmful free radicals and reactive oxygen species.
- Sunscreen agents alone do not protect against these damaging molecules.
- It is imperative that sunscreen products contain antioxidants.
- Research has consistently shown that antioxidants work best in *Blends (multiple types)
- Some antioxidants have been proven to work especially well mediating the effects of UV radiation. White Tea and Green Tea extracts as well as Vitamins C and E are examples of this.
A Perfect Storm
- Even with the application of sunscreen and anti-oxidant protection, research has shown that harmful skin damage skill occurs.
- Studies have shown that the skin's immune system is greatly compromised with even the slightest exposure to UV rays
- This finding is especially important because, it is during UV exposure that the skin is in NEED of the UTMOST protection from it's immune system.
- DNA damage occurs when exposed to UV rays.
- Irregular cells are not removed as quickly and efficiently under the influence of UV radiation.
*BECAUSE THIS SPECIFIC DAMAGE OCCURS TO THE SKIN'S IMMUNE SYSTEM EVEN WITH THE USE OF TOPICALLY APPLIED ANTI-OXIDANTS AND SUNSCREEN PROTECTIVE AGENTS, SCIENTISTS ARE SUGGESTING THE USE OF INGREDIENTS THAT WILL RESULT IN AN IMMUNE PROTECTION FACTOR, (IPF).
A&E Beauty Laser recommends the use of the following sunscreens from Revision Skincare. They all contain the ingredients which provide an Immune Protection Factor/ IPF.
